About Gastrointestinal Diseases

The gastrointestinal system consists of a number of different organs with unique structures and functions. Issues with any of these organs can result in commonly reported symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and others. Achalasia - disorder of the motility of the esophagus that can cause problems swallowing

Barrett's Esophagus - abnormal growth pattern in a section of the esophagus that may cause a small increase in risk for esophageal cancer

Eosinophilic esophagitis - allergic condition that affects the esophagus

Esophageal cancer

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - acid reflux, aka "heart burn"

Cirrhosis - scarring that results from chronic diseases of the liver

Gallstones - stones that form in the gallbladder that can cause issues with digestion and abdominal pain

Liver and pancreas cancer

Hepatitis - inflammation of the liver that often occurs due to infection by a virus

Pancreatitis - inflammation of the pancreas that is often caused by alcohol consumption or gallstones

Celiac Disease - a chronic disease that causes problems with the digestion of gluten

Irritable Bowel Syndrome - a non-specific condition leading to abdominal pain and problems with bowel movements

Lactose Intolerance - a condition resulting in the inability to properly digest lactose that is caused by abnormalities in the small intestine

Short Bowel Syndrome - a condition where the small intestine is a shorter length than normal, causing problems with digestion

C. diff Infection - an infection due to bacteria in the colon that can result in severe diarrhea

Colon Cancer

Colon Polyps - growth of the inner lining of the large intestine that can sometimes progress to cancer

Diverticulosis - small outpouchings of the lining of the intestine

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - chronic disease involving inflammation of the lining of the colon; the two types of IBD are Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
