Our Mission and Goals

East Carolina Gastroenterology PA is a gastrointestinal disease clinic initially founded as Johnson Digestive Disease Clinic in 1996. East Carolina Gastroenterology Endoscopy Center is a state of the art gastrointestinal endoscopy Ambulatory Surgery Center opened in October 2006. We acquired the North Carolina state surgery center license, and also became Medicare accredited as an ambulatory surgery center in 2006.

Our mission as a Gastroenterology clinic is to improve the health of the community we serve by maintaining the highest possible standards in the practice of medicine. We are committed to the continual enhancement of the quality of care, and the quality of life of the people we serve.

Our mission as an Endoscopy Center is to provide the highest quality of care in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy. We are committed to working closely with our patients, families, and other health care providers to ensure excellent, cost effective state of the art care. We continually seek new and advanced ways of diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal diseases. We undergo regular inspections and have maintained accreditation with Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) since 2006.

We are also committed to the advancement of medical practice through participation in clinical research.


Our goals as an ambulatory center are to:

Dr. Peter Eweje is board certified in Gastroenterology. He graduated medical school in 1986 before proceeding to the United Kingdom for residency training, becoming a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1993(equivalent to US board certification in Internal Medicine). He received his United States residency training in Internal medicine, and fellowship in Gastroenterology both at Nassau County University Center in Long Island, New York. He entered private practice in Jacksonville in 1997 where he has continued to provide top notch care to the citizens of Onslow and neighboring counties.

Dr. Eweje is actively involved in clinical research and has served as Principal Investigator of numerous research studies including GERD, IBS, Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis and various other gastrointestinal diseases.

He is a member of various gastroenterology societies, and a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology.
